Minutes from the Dec 2, 2012 MDDA Board Meeting

Meeting called to order:   2:30 PM

Guest Speaker Susie Koos-Acker, Executive Director of American Driving Society, also Newsletter Editor of Dairyland Driving Club.

Topic of discussion was how to attract more members to MDDA. Susie estimated that 30% of ADS members compete, and 60% are recreational.

What attracted her to attend her first MDDA Event, 2 years ago at Blackhawk Park

Low entry fee,

Close to home

Could use her training equipment, didn’t need fancy harness or cart

Knew there were other drivers who could help

What impressed her about the event: everyone was encouraging, she won second place, and

had fun!

Treasurer’s Report Beginning Balance as of 1/1/2012 $3,652.35 Balance as of 12/2/2012 $2,091.79

Gary Jackson moved, and Jac DeWeese seconded approval of the Treasurer’s report.

Ruth and Tim Casserly have agreed to be managers for Iron Oak 2013.

Fundraising Ideas

Consider raising rider fees for Iron Oak to put them more in line with other events in the area.    Ruth Casserly compiled ride fees for 15 other rides, and in most cases, Iron Oak fees were $5 less per ride.  As the manager, Ruth can set the fees as she feels needed.

Raise MDDA membership fees (the fee includes membership in UMECRA.) Gary Jackson moved, and Tim Casserly seconded raising fees for both single and family by $10.  Discussion about whether the increase was equitable between single and family.  Motion was amended to increase single membership by $10, and family by $15.

Current Amount New Amount Newsletter Format
Single $30 $40 Digital
Family $45 $60 Digital
Single $40 $50 Hardcopy
Family $55 $70 Hardcopy

Proposed Rule Change

A proposed rule change to UMECRA will be voted on at the January 18-20, 2013 Annual Meeting at Olympia Resort, Oconomowoc.  This rule change would establish the recovery time after a competitive drive to fifteen minutes for both singles and pairs.   Currently singles get 10 minutes, and pairs get 15.

Arabian Horse Association National Ride

The AHA is considering having an open driving event one day at their National Ride October 24-28, 2013 in Chandler, IL at Pather Creek State Park (near Springfield).  The drive would most likely be on Friday the 25th, when there are no rides scheduled.   In preparation of this event, the AHA has submitted the AHA driving rules and the MDDA driving rules to AHA Distance Committee to help promote distance driving as a sport.

Taking the Reins

Gary Jackson commented on the “Taking the Reins” event, sponsored by the Wisconsin Horse Council, held at the Alliant Energy Center.   The event was not a financial success, but those who attended had a great time.  One of the events was offering participants a chance to ride along with an experienced driver.  Melanie Lichtfield from Columbus Carriage Classic indicated that she had 200 ride-a-longs.  This would indicate a strong interest in driving in the area.

Driving Games

Jac DeWeese presented a proposal on a fun day of driving, possibly called “Driving Games.”  This event would be for fun only, and a way to educate and to attract more people to the fun of driving.  MDDA Members were asked to check their calendars for possible open weekends in which to host the event.  Events could include things such as an obstacle course, cones course, “Gamblers Choice,” ½-mile trot, set your time (walk or trot,) or cross country courses.   Participants could be charged $5 per event, and costs would be limited to prizes and insurance.   This would be a fair weather only event, as it is intended to be fun.  MDDA members would be encouraged to volunteer, but we would also try to make sure members had a chance to participate in a few events.

Tim Casserly moved and Gary Jackson seconded having the Jack Shea family as honorary members for 2012.  Motion carried unanimously
