Just a note of possible interest

by Jac Deweese

Rick came to my place on Wednesday to pick up his repaired cart.  First we checked it out and fit the breeching hold back straps in place, then we hitched Buddy and did one trip around the field to make sure everything was adjusted to the best of our ability.

After the trial run I offered to remove the mold from the reins.  We took my truck up to my tack room and I cleaned the reins with diluted vinegar and then coated them with harness honey.

A little visiting and we returned to Rick’s trailer to load Buddy and the cart.  (My fist exposure to Rick’s very neat cart carrier!)  Rick was shortly on the road.

Thursday morning at about 6:30 I get a call.  It’s Rick who asks if the reins are still in the back of my truck!  Now I hadn’t noticed Rick putting the reins in the truck, I thought he had them in his lap, so without putting on my shoes I run out to the truck and check.  Sure enough they are laying in the back … and dew covered!

He tells me the drive is scheduled for 10am and I offer to meet him on the north side of Madison, after I deliver my daughter to work in Portage at 8am.

Sure enough I’m able to get to Madison at 8:30 and meet Rick.  Then he tells me he’ll have to drive back to my place since we also forgot the fenders for his cart!

We finally get everything together, I think, and he is ready to head back to Palmyra at 9am.  Now I know it is an hour and a half drive!

Obviously, Rick lucked out as usual.  Being the only driver, management apparently let him start after the stated start time!

Anyway, congratulations, Rick, on a very successful outing!
