The Best Obstacle Course Races for Beginners Ranked

1. Rugged Maniac

I know that a lot of people may disagree with this one, but I’ve run a lot of OCR events and have always had a great time at Rugged Maniac. From a fun course, big inflatable obstacles, and smaller but more well thought out festival area. There are more than a few reasons that it’s at the top of the list for the best obstacle course races for beginners.

  • It’s a 5k course. This is on the shorter side of most OCR events making it great for first timers.
  • They are cheap! You can often get tickets for under $50. Which makes them an incredible deal compared to other race series that are typically over $100 for the shortest distance.
  • The obstacles are big and inflatable. Meaning you can throw your body into them without fear of getting hurt. While also providing a few challenges and obstacles mixed in.
  • The events are as much a party as a race. Rugged Maniac is a smaller event, but does a great job of creating a festival vibe.
  • They offer multiple lap options. Unlike the other races, Rugged Maniac allows you to buy a multi lap pass. Last time I raced, I ran with a dad during the competitive heat and he was then running with his daughter for her first race later on.

What does all this mean? For a true beginner this is the perfect combo. And very affordable entry fee, short 5k course, and big & fun inflatable obstacles. I know some people may look down on this event compared to their larger counterparts, but at least you know those elitists won’t be there! So you will be free to enjoy the course with others looking to just have a good time. Lastly, I love that they offer a multi lap option. Something other races really need to catch up on.

2. Tough Mudder

The Best Obstacle Course Races for Beginners Ranked (2)

Featuring huge obstacles and tons of mud, Tough Mudder finds itself at number two on my list of beginner friendly obstacle courses. While the big obstacles may seem intimidating at first, they are almost all team oriented. Requiring groups and random strangers to work together to complete. Creating a unique bonding experience other races just can’t provide. But that’s not the only reason for making the list.

  • Team oriented races. Unlike most other OCR events where you race as an individual, Tough Mudder is more about completing the obstacles together.
  • There is no timing. Unlike other events, this isn;t a race. It’s about having fun and completing something challenging.
  • Friendly non-competitive atmosphere. For most people that love Tough Mudder it is more about the party than racing. With the overall vibe being relaxed and casual.

The combination of team oriented obstacles and a non competitive atmosphere is really why I find Tough Mudder as a great choice for first timers. The obstacles themselves may seem a bit large and intimidating at first, but I promise the bigger obstacle the bigger fun! With most not requiring any elite skills, just teamwork. With one of my favorite things being that it forces you to work with strangers. Building an incredibly strong sense of community. You will find Tough Mudder top fans as some of the most loyal in the industry.

3. Spartan Race

The top dog when it comes to obstacle course racing, Spartan Race has built a reputation for toughness around the world. But that shouldn’t discourage first time races from hitting the course. In fact, Spartan Race is probably the most common first OCR event for racers. Offering a ton of events in the US and around the world, there are more than a few reasons first timers tend to choose Spartan.

  • Access to races. Being the biggest brand in the sport has some benefits, like putting on a lot of races all over the country / world. Making it easier for people to find an event to participate in.
  • Community atmosphere. While the elite and age group racers tend to take the race seriously, the majority of racers are there to have a good time and test themselves.
  • A good mix of challenging and doable obstacles. One thing Spartan does well is provide a good mix of obstacles. Most first timers will be able to do a lot of them, while also being motivated to improve on the obstacles they fail.
  • Lot’s of distance options. Spartan Race not only holds a lot of events, they offer a bunch of distance and race types. Offering anything from 3 miles to an ultra marathon.
  • The most recognized name in the industry. For many first time runners, finishing and telling their friends is a big part of the goal. And completing a Spartan Race is something that most people will know, and recognize as an accomplishment.

Overall Spartan Race’s brand can scare a lot of first timers. With the most recognizable name in OCR and reputation for a tough race. But have no fear, all that bravado and build up will only make the actual course feel easier. You will be challenged and probably won’t complete all of the obstacles. But use that motivation to get better and crush your next race. And there are going to be plenty of obstacles that you can do!

4. Savage Race

The Best Obstacle Course Races for Beginners Ranked (3)

Last on the list is the second largest OCR series in the US. Savage Race has earned a reputation for being one most trusted brands in the sport. From their fully transparent handling of Covid to their innovative obstacles, there is a lot to love about Savage Race. And if you’re a beginner really looking to push your limits against some of the industry’s toughest obstacles, this may be the event for you.

  • Consistently the highest ranked customer support in OCR. You know you are going to be taken care of if anything affects your race day.
  • Not a lot of mud. Typically mud is not a big factor in a savage race, unless mother nature plays a part of course. But it’s not uncommon to finish a Savage Race looking somewhat clean. Especially with the big slide finish.
  • The most innovative and difficult obstacle in the United States. Savage Race offers runners a very european style of racing. You are going to see a lot of hanging grip obstacles.
  • Might as well take on the toughest. Get a taste of the type of obstacle the best athletes in the world complete. Thes Savage Rig has been known to humble a lot of people.

I’m not going to lie to you, Savage Race is one of the more difficult OCR events in the US. But there is a reason why this series also consistently wins the “annual fan favorite” vote held by Obstacle Racing Media. The community atmosphere, incredible race director, and innovative obstacles are all on the highest level. And even if you fail an obstacle, there will be plenty of other people of all skill levels failing them too. But this only makes completing them all that more satisfying when you do.
