Outstanding Leadership and Service Award

Jac presents Wes Licht a Recognition of Leadership and Service plaque

After serving on our board of directors for 10 years and as our President for 5 years, Wes Licht has asked to retire from the board.  We are concerned by the loss of so much experience and knowledge, but we can understand the desire and need to be relieved of the responsibility associated with serving on the board of directors.

10 years is a long time, but in fact, Wes has been intimately involved in distance driving since 1996, 14 years ago.  In 1999 or 2000 Wes and a small group of driving enthusiasts sat down and organized the Midwest Distance Driving Association.  The first official meeting of this new organization was in 2001.

He then worked diligently conducting clinics on distance driving all over the Midwest..  He has continued with those clinics right through this year and we hope he continues to be involved in the future.  It is generally believed that his past career as a teacher contributes greatly to his ability to present material at our clinics.

Many of the current members were introduced to distance driving by Wes.  He has many contacts in the driving community through his training business and his active participation in horse activities.  In addition to distance driving, Wes is active in the Dairyland Driving Club, CDE, Pleasure Shows and a regular participant and clinician at the Horse Fair.

Through all of these activities he has continually and constantly promoted distance driving and MDDA.

It is safe to say that no other individual has had as much influence on the development and success of MDDA.

It gives me great pleasure to present Wes Licht this plaque in Recognition of his 10 years of Leadership and Service.

Wes Licht presents Jack Shea with 'Volunteer of Year' Award

Jack Shea has been on the board of directors for MDDA and its treasurer for a couple of years now.  Each year he does things better.  As treasurer he has been conscientious and efficient, with a great multitude of tasks.  These involve the payment of bills and the receiving of membership money for MDDA from which he composes the membership list.  He also handles the funds for UMECRA membership, insurance and matters specific  to UMECRA and other sanctioning groups.   His thoroughness and responsibility with his outstanding reports and timely payments has been recognized by our board and various leaders of UMECRA.  His reporting model has even been shared with another international horse group.

Each year Jack has done more things and in 2010 his efforts for MDDA were exceptional.   Near the beginning of the year he resolved problem issues for Glacier Trails delicately and professionally.  As a Co-Ride Manager at Iron Oak, he was totally involved with all aspects of this brand new 2-day event.  From clearing trails to set-up, the monumental job of registration and record-keeping, to the final hour of clean up, Jack was doing it.  Perhaps the most challenging task was finding veterinarians for the event and Jack persisted until he succeeded.   He even has the judges ready for 2011.  Lastly, Jack has been instrumental in assisting President Gary Jackson and the board with organizing our telephone meetings.   He also has worked very closely with webmaster Jac Deweese so that MDDA on line is a great and timely resource.

Our thanks to Jack Shea for his efforts in support of Midwest Distance Driving and congratulations for a well-deserved Volunteer of the Year award.

Outstanding Participation Award

Tim and Ruth show off their 'Outstanding Particpation' awards

After their rookie year experience in 2009, Tim and Ruth Casserly spent the winter and early spring resolving a transportation problem.  Hauling their team and carriage required two vehicles and made it expensive and difficult to travel to many of our events.

Tim designed, built and installed a rack and hoist system on top of his pickup so the carriage could be hauled on the vehicle while towing the horse trailer.  With a test run this spring it proved to be successful and they set a goal of competing in every event in 2010.

As the season progressed it seemed they were likely to achieve that goal, but Point Chaser added a driving day to their event that was not on UMECRA’s original schedule.

With the exception of that one drive, Tim and Ruth did compete in every event.

Perhaps more outstanding is the fact that their horsemanship and driving skills allowed them to compete in every drive offered at those events up until the final day (4th day) at DRAWarama where they elected not to compete.  (No one else competed that day either!)  They ended up attending 10 events and competing in 21 of a potential 22 drives at those events.

In midseason we were asked for contact to be interviewed for an article in Driving Digest.  It was easy to direct the writer (Sue Greenall) to Tim and Ruth.  Look for the article in the Nov/Dec or Jan/Feb issue.

We are proud to present Tim and Ruth Casserly with these Outstanding Participation awards.
