WELCOME to MDDA

We’re glad you stopped by to visit our website on distance driving. Perhaps you’ve just discovered MDDA and want to learn more about just what we do. Perhaps you’ve come to check the schedule to see when and where competitive drives are being held or check the results of past drives. Or perhaps you are just interested in looking at some photographs of our horses and drivers at the various competitions. Whatever the reason, thanks for browsing and drop us a line if we can answer any questions or be of service to you.

COLORama is Cancelled!

COLORama this weekend has been cancelled because of unsafe trails as a result of too much rain, and more rain predicted this week.  Please pass this along to any driving friends who were thinking of coming but don’t check our website regularly.  The cancellation has also been posted on UMECRA’s website and FaceBook page.

There are still three more driving events in October, so plenty of chances to get some great trail miles on your horse(s).  We hope to see you out there soon.

It is with a heavy heart that I pass on the news that Tim Casserly died earlier this week. He will be greatly missed.

Timothy D Casserly  1951 – 2016

Timothy D Casserly, 65, died on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 as a result of a tragic bicycle accident at the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was born on July 23, 1951, the son of Harold and Cecelia Casserly. After graduating from Rockford Guilford High School in 1970, he served in the Army Reserves from 1970 to 1976. He was a journeyman electrician with IBEW Local 364. He married Ruth Aurand on September 17, 1983.

Tim was an Eagle scout, a private pilot and parachuted 99 times out of a perfectly good airplane. He and Ruth met on a frigid January weekend in 1982 on a Rock River Ski Association ski trip. Tim was a horse enthusiast, trail riding for many years, then driving his prized Arabian horses to many awards in distance driving competitions. He was a dedicated volunteer and member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and a natural mentor to many. He was a gadget guy, master tinkerer and considered himself Mr. FixIt.  “I can fix anything but the crack of dawn and a broken heart, but I’m still working on Dawn.” He leaves many broken hearts in his enormous circle of friends.

Predeceased by parents and sister Mary Bridget Creech.

Survivors include wife Ruth, brother John T Casserly, nieces and nephews Janna Perry, Patti Fink, Brad Olson, Carol Hannagan, Mark Voelkerding, Kenny Voelkerding, Charlotte Nicholas, David Arco, Eric Peterson, Emily Aurand, Alex and Henry Aurand, spouses and families.

We will have a Celebration of Life gathering on Sunday, 7/31 from 2 – 4 pm at the Union Church, 267 S. Pecatonica Road, Pecatonica, IL. Please bring nothing more than stories to share. Memorial contributions in Tim’s name would be greatly appreciated by the Boy Scouts of America, Blackhawk Area Council, 2820 McFarland Rd, Rockford, IL 61107 or the Seward Historical Society, P.O.Box 44, Seward, IL 61077.

Rule Change- no more “Limited Distance”

At the February board meeting, it was decided to eliminate the “Limited Distance” category, and replace it with a Restricted Mileage category.  One of the reasons for this change was because the Colorama drive only offers a 25 mile drive, which isn’t very “limited.”

The Restricted Mileage category is for those drivers and horses who complete less than 100 miles in a season.  A minimum of three drives will be required.  The one with the most points wins.  Any driver/horses(s) combination can compete.

To Members of MDDA,

Thank you for all the kindnesses you have shown to our family. It is a great comfort to us at this time. Our father was a very special man and he especially loved the time spent with his MDDA family. Our hope is that we can take our mother to some of the events if possible. She would love to see all of you. The flower box and flowers are beautiful. Thank you for the $50 gift. It is going to a great organization that has helped our parents.

As you may know, they are in the last stages of finalizing plans for the allowable uses of the Sauk Prairie Recreation Area.  It’s very important that they know that ridden horses and driven horses can, and do, work successfully on the same trails; that trails suitable for snowmobiles are wide enough for horse & cart.

Please, share with the membership & ask them to respond, for the good of equine sports.

Jack Shea’s Tack Sale

We received this email from Jack’s daughter Megan this morning:

My dad, Jack Shea, is going to sell all of his horse equipment and wanted to give his ol’ driving buddies first dibs before we try Craigslist. I noticed there is an MDDA drive in Palmyra the first weekend of October. Is there anyway to get an announcement out to the club so people can stop in that weekend to buy whatever they want? We are in the process of getting everything cleaned up and then I will have a list of items and photos. It is riding and driving equipment.

Thank you very much!
-Megan (Shea) Javornik

Jack lives near Sullivan, WI which is a little north of Palmyra (think: DRAWarama 10/1 through 4)

Tim & Ruth Casserly

Louise Riedel Bra Buster Ride & Drive

Hello all- I am in search of a groom for Tim at the L. Riedel ride/drive, which is coming up August 8 and 9. If you are interested in riding with him in the cart with our 2 horses, PLEASE let me know!! You’d be doing be a big favor, so I can ride in the CTR division. Not sure if they will overlap at this ride, but they usually do. Right now, all I know for a Saturday “go” time is “afternoon”. Sunday’s drive will leave in the morning. If you could let me know before Sunday night 8/2, that would be great. Otherwise, I will post my request to the riders on FaceBook. Thanks!! Ruth casserlytimruth@gmail.com
