Midwest Distance Driving Association (MDDA Annual Awards Meeting & Potluck
McFarland Community Center
November 14, 20102:00 PM

Individuals Present: Ruth Casserly, Tim Casserly, Larry Clapper, Mary Clapper, Becki Deweese-Mielke, Jac Deweese, Marguerite Deweese, Michelle Deweese, Terri Delke, Carol Dilbeck, Glenn Garbisch, Alice Hubert, Ray Hubert, Gary Jackson (President), Katz Jackson (Secretary), Dave Kluge, Roxanne Crombeche Kluge, Jane Licht, Wes Licht, Linda Low, Derrick Mielke, Jocelyn Mielke, Rick Nelson, Lori Schoofs, Tom Schoofs, Jack Shea (Treasurer), Luann Shea, Nate Sunderlage, Tammy Sunderlage, Tony Troyer

The MDDA annual business meeting was called to order at 2:00 PM, following the potluck dinner.  The two main topics were nomination of Board members for upcoming 2011 elections and Safety Rules/Equipment.  Upcoming events, in particular, were also added to the discussion.

Composition of MDDA Board Wes Licht confirmed that he would be retiring from the Board, and would continue as a resource member of the club.  Ruth Casserly agreed to serve on the Board.  Wes made a motion that Ruth Casserly, along with all current Board members, serve for 2011.  Tony Troyer seconded the motion.  Motion passed.  Officers will be elected by the Board at the next meeting.

Jac Deweese led the discussion on current safety rules and acceptable driving equipment.  Ray and Alice Hubert demonstrated the type of harness they are using with their driving horses.  Jac also demonstrated the more traditional harness he uses.  The main differences are that the bridles used by Hubert’s are blinkerless and there is no breeching.  They explained how braking is done with their harnesses, and have had no problems in the various terrains they’ve driven this year.   All agreed that it is very difficult to draft language to cover all types of harnesses and driving situations.  The harnesses, as used by the Hubert’s, should be acceptable, and the Board agreed to review driving language and draft new language, as needed.   Discussion also addressed the use of the caveson and its main purpose, which is to keep the bridle-blinkers-closer to the horse’s head and block out light.  At this time, cavesons are not mandatory, and differing opinions were acknowledged regarding their usefulness.  All agreed that ensuring safety for drivers as well as other equestrians encountered along the trail was of utmost importance for all participating in this sport.

Discussion followed regarding the first drive of the year, Iron Oak, which will take place in the same location as last year, on April 23, 2011.  The site is at Ukarydee Campground, at Castle Rock Horse Trails, near Arkdale, WI (608) 564-2233.   Due to being Easter weekend, there will be no classroom clinic offered this year and the event will be one day only, on Saturday.   Individual roles and responsibilities related to food, P/R Team, and awards would be clarified at upcoming MDDA meetings.  Mary Clapper shared that she will let everyone know of any trail clean-up days prior to the event in early spring.  Katz Jackson is working with UMECRA folks to jointly sponsor a clinic in 2011 at another date.  The clinic might begin with a common lecture/session and then perhaps break into respective riders and drivers groups for information specific to each discipline.  It is APDRA’s turn to offer a clinic this year and more information will follow as it becomes available.

Webmaster Jac Deweese shared his recently developed option of joining UMECRA/MDDA on-line.  The form is already posted and can be totally completed electronically, including payment, using Pay Pal.  Jac was unanimously thanked for his continuing active and exciting role with MDDA’s website.  He is continuously improving the site and his efforts are very much appreciated!

The business meeting was followed by a wonderfully informative presentation by lifelong endurance rider, Bonnie Mielke.  Entitled, “Conditioning the Distance/Endurance Horse”.  For further information on Bonnie’s presentation and photos of the Annual Meeting, please refer to Jac Deweese’s article posted on our website,
