This weekend Ray and I went to Southern Kettle Moraine State Park near Palmyra for a competition.  I took Lil Kay, and Ray took Penguin so he could do a bit of ground driving with him.  It was quite warm on Friday, pleasant on Saturday and Sunday.  On our way home on Sunday we had about a half hour of intense rain, but the rain stopped by the time we got home.

For being a tough little mare, Lil Kay sure had a case of separation anxiety this weekend any time she was away from Penguin.  Friday night when we were having her checked by the vets before our drive on Saturday, she was very agitated, kicking out at everyone around her, and whinnying constantly. She was docked a lot of points because of her attitude.  Saturday for our drive, she caught sight of some riders, and she insisted on catching up to them.  Tim Casserly and his team had gone out 15 minutes ahead of us, and we caught up to them around mile 4.5.  We followed them to the turn around point, and then for a bit of the way back.  Lil Kay was getting so frustrated at going their speed, that we passed them at about mile eight.  Ray had Penguin waiting for her at the finish, and she calmed down a bit, but then when it was time for our vet check, she became very agitated again because Penguin wasn’t next to her.  We lost more attitude points, points because we finished 15 minutes early, and points because her heart rate and respiration were elevated.

Sunday was a much better day.  She allowed me to determine how fast to go.  She was quite willing to walk some, so she must have been a bit tired from the day before.  Again, Penguin was waiting for her, and this time we kept him close to her for the vet check.  We lost no points for attitude, and her heart and respiration rates were much better.  We were only five minutes early.  Only one point separated us from the first place finisher.  Had I stopped for two minutes and enlightened one of the riders about why driving horses need to trot up hills, I could have won.
