Greetings to all,
DRAWarama is a four day competition held at Southern Kettle Moraine State Park in SE Wisconsin.  Ray and I were only able to make the last two days, as we didn’t have enough vacation time for the whole event.  My goal this weekend was to complete a 20 mile drive with Lil Kay.  She won the Limited Distance Championship last year, so this year I wanted to be in the next level of competition.  I needed to do at least one longer distance event.

The weather was not the most cooperative.  Friday started out alright, but by the time we pulled into the campground at 5:00 PM, the temperature was starting to drop.  It got down into the 30s.  Saturday it was rainy.  Not a heavy rain, but a constant mist.  Our 20 mile drive didn’t start until 1:00 PM.   By the time we finished at 5:28, the rain had stopped, and the temps were dropping again.

The 20 mile drive was done in two loops.  After the first loop, we come back into camp for a vet check, and then a hold for 50 minutes.  Then we go out for our second loop.  Kay was full of energy on the first loop, and we finished very early.   On the second loop, I was able to get her to walk a bit more, so we didn’t finish quite so early.

She was full of energy Sunday morning, so we did a 10 mile drive.  My plan was to take it easy, since she had a big day the day before.  Our first half went very well.  We hit the half way point at the right time.  As we were turning around, we were passed by three riders who were racing for the finish line.  Lil Kay was not about to let anyone pass her, so we ended up following those riders the whole way back to camp, at a much faster pace than I was hoping.  Even though she hasn’t raced in more than 13 years, she is still very competitive.
