Annual Meeting

Minutes from the Dec 14, 2014 MDDA Board Meeting

Guest Speaker: TJ Clibborn, Carriage Driver, Extreme Mustang Challenge, horse trainer extraordinaire. TJ hails from the largest cattle farm in Australia which is 8,500 square miles and the same size as state of Massachusetts. 300 people live on the farm. His grandfather got him interested in carriage driving. He met a cowboy from California who introduced him to the Old Sacramento Carriage Company. He had a passenger from a hotel in Maui, who invited him to come and drive at that resort. Then he traveled to the Florida Carriage Museum, where he connected with Elizabeth Keathly who was driving a team of ponies at the World Equestrian Games, and became her navigator for a season.

In 2008 he participated in the Extreme Mustang Makeover. He also participated in the Mustang Million, in which he took 4 horses. This year he has been invited Colt Starting Challenge in Calgary Alberta. He currently trains horses at “The Farm” near Milton, WI. His advice on training: “If a horse can learn a habit that fast (fingers snapping) he can learn a good habit that fast.”
Business Meeting called to order 1:15

Members present: Tim Casserly, Ray and Alice Hubert, Jac and Marguerite DeWeese, Tony Troyer, Carol Dilbeck, Terri Delke, Wes and Jane Licht, Jeanne White, Sharon Hahn, Philip Jansen

Minutes from the September 22, 2014 meeting were presented. Moved by Tim Casserly, seconded by Alice Hubert to approve. Unanimous approval by the board.

Treasurer’s Report presented: Iron Oak figures: Total Income $4,710, total expenses $3,426.43, for a net profit of $1,283.57. Beginning bank balance as of 1/1/2014 $1,878.56, Ending balance as off 12/14/2014 $3370.67 Moved by Wes Licht, seconded by Tony Troyer to accept. Unanimous approval by the board. Wes Licht offered commendations to Ruth for managing the annual and Iron Oak budgets.
Iron Oak Review:
There were many favorable reviews of the trail. The event wouldn’t be possible without the support of a lot of volunteers and Ride Managers Tim and Ruth Casserly. The weather cooperated; there were 93 riders, compared to 70 the year prior. There were 29 novices this year, which is how to grow the sport. “Food Queen Victoria “Robison and Nancy McCoy were incredibly helpful, and have volunteered for next year.

Trail marking signs were borrowed from Lucy Bagot. These were 9X9” Plexiglas signs colored pink, blue, and yellow, with large black arrows. We are looking for a sponsor to help pay for the club to buy their own signs. Tony Troyer moved and Terri Delke seconded designating $300 to buy the materials to make the signs.

New Business:
UMECRA will be assigning horse numbers in 2015. All of the details have not yet been worked out. If a horse has an AERC number, UMECRA will most likely use that number. However, AERC numbers are used for riding horses, so it isn’t clear how they will assign numbers for driving horses. More details will hopefully be available at the convention January 17-19, 2015 in Clair MI. How the number will be assigned may impact what information is gathered on event application forms.

There is a driver from North Dakota who would like to have more drives in MN.

Ruth commented in her notes that those from WI should consider joining DRAW. DRAW sponsors several driving competitions each year.

UMECRA has asked groups to present a skit at the convention. One idea for MDDA is “What is really in a spares kit.” Please contact the Casserlys or Huberts if you have any suggestions of items which we should include in the kit.

Tony Troyer mentioned that interest in driving is peaking, especially through the Arabian Horse Association. He is encouraging other Arabian owners to drive.

A general discussion about how to recruit member ensued. Philip Jansen suggested speaking to local 4-H Clubs. Terri Delke suggested speaking to other driving clubs such as the Northwoods Driving Club, and the Hub Club in Northern Illinois.

Tony would like to offer a clinic for recruiting new drivers. Jac DeWeese agreed to offer his farm as a possible site. Tony will contact Jill Feller about insurance through UMECRA. The tentative date is April 25, 2015. Tony moved, and Tim Casserly seconded, starting work on the clinic.

Jac DeWeese raised the issue of whether we should continue with the LD category. With lower numbers of participants, he feels the regular and the LD categories could be combined. Alice Hubert commented that she preferred the separation, as those who might have an older horse or one recovering from injury might have difficulty competing against the high mileage horses. Consensus was to keep the LD category.

Tony will contact Jill Feller about offering a six-mile drive at Kettles and Bits in early May. This event would be soon after the clinic on the 25th, and would offer those considering the sport a chance to try it even if they haven’t spent a lot of time conditioning their horses. The trails at Kettles and Bits would lend themselves well to novice horses. MDDA will provide the prizes for that drive.
Election of Officers:
Nominations for President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary were held. Tony Troyer moved and Sharon Hahn seconded to keep all current office holders. Unanimous approval by the board.

Vice President: Tim Casserly
Treasurer: Ruth Casserly
